Get to Know CyberGRX: Meet Adam Gray
Meet Adam, Data Scientist
1. Where did you grow up?
I have lived in north Mississippi for most of my life. I have been in Oxford, Mississippi since attending the University of Mississippi and earning my Ph.D. in Mathematics there.
2. What brought you to CyberGRX?
I was looking for opportunities to work on interesting data problems, and heard about the company through a friend of mine. I thought the product they were building was exciting and could provide me the sort of work I could really dig into and explore. In the past two years, I have been pleased to have those expectations confirmed, though the problems are probably a lot more interesting to me than anyone else.
3. What do you do at CyberGRX/what’s your typical day like?
Most of my work involves integrating threat intelligence feeds into our analytics. I help design data models and algorithms, but I spend most of my day talking to my code the same way I talk to my seven year old – very patiently, with lots of “please, just do the thing I’m asking you to do” and wondering why I’m not getting anywhere.
4. What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Spend more time learning to code. I took a few computer science courses in college, but really got interested in data science and programming after I had finished my degrees and started teaching. I really enjoy puzzles and wish I had discovered programming puzzles and algorithms years sooner.
5. What has had the greatest impact on your life?
That would probably be the golf ball that impacted my head when I was fifteen. That gave me a week’s hospital stay, seizures, speech and occupational therapy, and permanent brain damage. I like to think it hasn’t held me back too much though.
6. What’s your hidden super power?
My ability to mentally deconstruct and reconstruct things. I’ve found it helps when doing mathematics, modeling data, coding, and making puns, one-liners, and assorted dad jokes. My kids probably don’t think that last part is hidden though.
