Get to Know CyberGRX: Meet Jon Hesse

Meet Jon, Director of Third-Party Development

1. Where did you grow up?

Lincoln, Nebraska

2. What brought you to CyberGRX?

I was attracted to the Exchange model.  There are some tasks where instead of 100 companies doing the same work 100 times, the work should be done really well just once by a centralized source and then shared for a fraction of the cost to the 100 companies.  There is also actionable information that can be gleaned from having all of this data on one platform.  I have a background in financial services and when I saw the business model of CyberGRX I immediately thought someone is going to end up being the Moody’s of Cybersecurity and this looks like it has a good chance.

3. What do you do at CyberGRX/what’s your typical day like?

My title is Director of Third-Party Development.  Most of the CyberGRX organization is focused on the enterprise and what we can do for them as clients.  I am solely focused on our Third Parties in the Exchange.  Whatever they need, I am their advocate.  My main focus is to show them how to create as much value with their assessment as possible.  In order to become a Third Party on our platform, they will have completed a CyberGRX Assessment and become a member of the Exchange.  I focus most of my time on showing Third Parties how to take this ‘asset’ they have put time and effort into and create more value with it whether it be saving time and money or faster enablement of doing business.

4. What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Life moves pretty quick, try to be more present.

5. What has had the greatest impact on your life?

Getting involved in athletics and taking that as far as I did has had a huge impact on my life.  There are so many life lessons that I think you can take from playing sports.  From being part of a team and what it means to be a teammate, to learning how to work hard and push yourself, to learning that you can do everything right and still lose.  So many great life lessons.

6. What’s your hidden super power?

I am not sure if I have a superpower, but I do have an interesting story.  I call it ‘winning the wrong lottery.’  I was a member of a high school state championship football team, two national championship football teams at the University of Nebraska, and was part of a Superbowl championship team with the Denver Broncos.  These events happen once a year and there is a limited amount of people on each team, so you have to be in the right place at the right time to be a part of one of these championships.  When you string them all together, the odds get astronomical.  My guess is that there are 40 or less people on the planet that have all three of these championships.  There are thousands, probably tens of thousands of people around the planet who have cashed multimillion-dollar lottery tickets.  That is why I call it ‘winning the wrong lottery’.  It is probably better than getting struck by lightning twice in the same place, which is probably about the same odds!
