CyberGRX Insider Interviews

Brianna - Security Analyst

What advice would you give someone who wants to join CyberGRX?

So you want to be a part of CyberGRX? Why? I ask your why because being drawn to CyberGRX means being drawn here for the purpose of change. Change in our industry and change within ourselves. This is not just a job, so know your why.

What is your definition of “happiness”?

Happiness for me is a personal feeling of gratitude for what I have accomplished, acceptance of the things I cannot change, and an appreciation of the person I was, am and will become, regardless of what the world tries to tell me.

What was your first job?

My first job was a bagger at a grocery store when I was in high school. During our late-shift we did silly things like race up the isles with the electric carts and had water gun fights with the cleaning solution. We got away with a lot because my classmate's mother was the supervisor. But it also taught me life responsibilities like what it means to earn money and how to manage time when you have multiple demands.

Pat - Software Tester

What are you happiest doing when you’re not working?

Anything outside: Hiking, biking, gardening, occasionally snow shoeing, or just hanging out on my patio watching the urban wildlife with a cold drink and family and friends.

What was your favorite summertime activity as a kid?

Riding my bike. I grew up in Denver, near Washington Park, and I would ride with friends everywhere. Back then you didn’t have to wear a helmet, and there is nothing like the feel of the wind in your hair as you ride as fast as you can, especially down hills. We would dare each other to ride with our feet up on the handlebars!

What’s the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career?

Be willing to expect the unexpected, to grab at those things that cross your path unexpectedly, or to veer around them if you have to. Everything that you do in life leads you to a destination different than the one you planned for – if you let it, so, enjoy the road trip!

Charles - Head DevOps Engineer

What is some of the best advice you've ever received?

The best advice I ever receive was that “Nothing worth doing is ever easy, it’s the challenge that really makes it worthwhile.”  It was from my father and it’s something he drilled into me from a pretty early age.

What is some advice for people early in their career?

It's easy to get lost trying to achieve lofty heights. Take time for you, pursue hobbies and spend time with people you care about. You’ll be surprised at the effect it has on you.

What is the coolest thing you're working on?

Pretty sure it has to be the Kubernetes powered smoker. I built every piece of it from the electronics and the smoker itself to all the software that’s driving it. As a result I have a smoker that I can control from anywhere, at any time, and that has extremely precise temperature control.

What can we find you doing on Sunday mornings?

On Sunday mornings you can usually find me wandering around my kitchen thinking about what to cook for breakfast. It’s one of my favorite meals to make because it's generally very simple but also delicious. Recently I’ve been on a kick trying different styles of Dutch Baby.

Michelle - Senior Content Marketing Manager

What was your favorite summertime activity as a kid?

Spending all day in my family’s pool then having a bonfire where we’d roast marshmallows and if we behaved that day, we got to make s'mores. (Spoiler: We rarely got s'mores!)

What is some advice for people early in their career?

At some point, don’t be afraid to take a job that isn’t what you went to school for or isn’t what you thought you’d be doing. Some of the most unique and helpful skills that I’ve developed over the years came from jobs completely unrelated to my formal education. Also, mistakes are your friend! Just make sure you learn from them.

Do you have any skills or talents that most people don’t know about?

I can read backwards and upside down at normal speed, which has actually come in handy a few times. I’m also very good at home improvement/fixing stuff. I’ve installed flooring, replaced toilets and vanities, installed lights, and garbage disposals, fixed wiring, etc. I taught myself everything by watching YouTube

Kiran - Sr. Director, Product Management

What is the coolest thing you're working on?

One of the cool things as part of my job is to drive Technology Alliances whereby I get to evaluate technologies that may be good partnership, licensing, or potential merger/acquisition targets for CyberGRX.

Name three words that you describe you.

Positive

Results-driven

Team builder

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Embrace every situation and figure out a solution. Don’t get blocked or complain.

What’s the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career?

  • Stay hungry and seek out – always keep the focus on driving results
  • Be adaptive, stay grounded, and embrace the situation
  • Build relationships and become a team player
  • Learn and understand the business world
